  • Typical Specifications

Width measurement of your sheet or strip products can be critical to the profitability of your processing line. Tight margins and demand for quality make it imperative the processes know the exact strip width at all times.  M.E.A. offers you the first simple, low cost, width gauge system using today’s newest ultra-sonics technology.  M.E.A., Incorporated’s low maintenance, easy-to-operate strip width measurement systems use off-line, non-contact, ultrasonic sensors, versatile enough for the most demanding ambient environment.  M.E.A. Ultrasonics II Strip Width Gauging is ideal for determining actual size of any strip on any process line.  With resolutions up to + or - 0.025”, the M.E.A. system meets most accuracy requirements of virtually any application.

M.E.A.’s ultrasonic sensing heads adapt to any strip gauging application – center guiding, edge guiding, coil centering as well as width gauging. The same sensing heads can be adapted for width gauging and center guiding, simply by adding control electronics.  Sensing heads are installed or replaced off-line, no need to shut down your process line during installation.  No costly maintenance either. Off-line sensors eliminate the need for support above and below the strip. No need to stop the process line if maintenance is required.  Sensing heads are unaffected by ambient light, smoke, steam, oil and temperature variation.

Description Of Operation

The M.E.A., Inc. UltraSonics II Strip Width Gauging System measures the time elapsed for sound waves from sensor to strip edge; then calculates the signal to provide absolute deviation of width.  Two signals are sent to the controller to compute this width deviation.  Transducers are located at the strip pass line, approximately 9" from the maximum anticipated width.  No part of the sensor system bridges the strips.  Control enclosure contains all electronics for the width system.  The width measurement display is digital.  The digital signal can also be sent to the line host computer.  Installation is simple: just mount the two transducers and connect the electronic enclosure.

NOTE: THE M.E.A., INC. STRIP WIDTH GAUGING SYSTEM CAN BE COMBINED WITH THE M.E.A, INC. ULTRASONICS II CENTER GUIDE SYSTEM USING THE SAME SENSING HEADS (WITH PROPER ELECTRONICS).
